On April 27, 2011 a deadly storm system plowed through Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. The main tornado destroyed Sew-Bee-It a wonderful fabric store in Ringgold. All of the fabric in this quilt went through the tornado and was recovered in what was left of the building or in the fields where other buildings had once stood.
Nancy Packard had a vision for this material, recovered and cleaned it up to make this stunning quilt. The center of this quilt represents the main tornado and in this space you can see the hail. The ring of red represents the death and destruction. The patches of green symbolize grass under the fallen trees with the darkened patches throughout the quilt denoting the loss of electricity resulting from downed power lines.
This storm system spawned off 8 other killing tornadoes as shown by the 8 diamond shapes. Inside the diamond shapes you can find the hail and the portrayal for the death and destruction from each twister.
The swirling stitching throughout the quilt is the interpretation for the vicious winds that day. Finally the purple fabric streaking to the outer edges throughout the quilt represents the community support and the time of rebuilding.
That fateful day 337 souls lost their lives at a cost of over 10 billion dollars.
